SHANNON, Miss. (WTVA) - 8th graders at Shannon Middle School were only two to three years old when September 11th happened.
That's why on days like Tuesday, U.S. history teacher April Williams says it's a perfect opportunity for students to ask questions about the attack on America.
The teacher says she always gives the facts of what happened then, and tries to put to rest any false information the students may have heard about 9/11.
Williams said, "I try to get them to understand not all Muslims hate Americans. I try to teach them the difference in your extremists."
Videos of the day the attack happened are part of the day's lesson.
For the students, who really don't remember anything from that day, September 11th still has them asking 'why.'
Student Jessica Gates said, "They were talking about it was so sad and what happened. I didn't know what it was but I felt really sad when I got older and learned about it. I felt sad on how many people lost their lives and didn't deserve it."
Student D.J. Smith said, "I wondered why they did it. I guess they didn't like us over here or something. It makes me feel bad."
The entire student body also remembered the 9/11 anniversary with a special program in the auditorium.
It's a learning opportunity, not only about the attacks, but also America's resolve.
Williams said, "One of the frames I like to show is, after all the smoke is settled, how you can see the people covered in smut. It's one solid color. You can't tell the difference between black, white, Hispanic. Everybody has united for one common cause."
School leaders encouraged the young people to be ready to continue that united front and always be mindful of what happened September 11, 2001.
