FULTON, Miss. (WTVA) — Some students at Itawamba Agricultural High School in Fulton are putting their knowledge to the test.

Their teacher and Scholars' Bowl team coach asks questions that cover subject matter from world history to pop culture.

Coach Chris Johnson said, "We study on our own some of the things some classes don't have the opportunity to get into in depth. For example we study things like art history and music history."

The students are only practicing now, but they recently took home first and second place honors from the Brain Brawl at Ole Miss.

They went up against much larger schools from Mississippi and Tennessee.

Students say the competition is a great way to keep their minds sharp.

Senior Josh Holsonback said, "One thing I like about it is that it reminds me of 'Jeopardy.' I watch a lot of that. It's exciting and you never know what's going to come at you. We have a lot of fun on the Scholars' Bowl team."

Senior Dayton Wilson said, "Quite simply I've always been interested in all these subjects. I find it fun to go online and learn something I haven't learned before."

Students who've completed a wide range of subject areas are on the team and often come back year after year.

Johnson said, "It's rewarding to see them grow as a team and individuals. They're learning things that are interesting to them. It comes in to help them as a team."

The students practice daily both as a team and individually and are always in pursuit of knowing the answer to the next question.

The Scholars' Bowl team stays busy.

This weekend they'll compete in Jackson.

The weekend after that they're off to a competition in Memphis.

They hope by next spring to be able to take part in some national tournaments.
