KOSSUTH, Miss. (WTVA) -- The Mississippi Highway Patrol is still investigating a Sunday evening crash on MS 2, near Kossuth, in Alcorn County, involving two horseback riders.

Troopers responded to the scene around 7:15 p.m.

They found Frankie Guynes, 53, of Corinth and Jessie Bowden, 54, of Rienzi, who had been riding separate horses in the east bound lane of MS 2.

Apparently both riders and horses were struck by an east bound 1997 Jeep, driven by Robert Clayton, 44, of Rienzi.

Guynes and Bowden were both airlifted to North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo.

They are continuing to recover.

Clayton was not hurt in the crash.

The accident remains under investigation.

According to the MHP, a horseback rider is considered a pedestrian, while a horse and buggy is considered a vehicle.
