PORT ST. JOE, Fla. (WTVA) -- Florida authorities say a Corinth man drowned Monday in the Gulf of Mexico.

Gulf County, Florida authorities identify the man as Thomas Wayne Timms, 45.

Officials say they were called to Seahorse Lane in Cape San Blas Monday about a man who was pulled from the water and unresponsive.

Witnesses told investigators Timms was swimming in the gulf during very rough surf conditions.

They say he began to yell for help about 100 feet past the surf line.

An experienced diver heard the screams and swam to Timms, who was unresponsive when he arrived.

The diver attempted water CPR, but conditions were too rough and he worked to pull Timms ashore.

Despite further efforts to revive Timms, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities say Timms was vacationing with his wife in Cape San Blas.
