CORINTH, Miss. (WTVA) -- A young Corinth girl is being called a hero.

Police officials say 25-year-old Garnett Hughes of Belzoni, Mississippi is in custody thanks to the brave actions of a 12-year-old.

Corinth Police Department Captain Ralph Dance says a man showed up at the front door of a Corinth home in a housing development near the Crossroads Arena 4:30 a.m. Sunday.

Dance says when the resident answered, he forced his way in and raped the woman.

"She was able to text her grandmother and tell her what was taking place. Grandmother was able to relay that to us. The night shift responded in a quick manner and did an excellent job," Captain Dance said.

Authorities says officers were able to catch the suspect as he tried to jump out of a back window.
