KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WTVA) -- The woman credited with modifying the Tennessee Valley Authority's reservoir operations has announced her retirement.

Janet Herrin is currently the chief administrative officer at the federal utility.

Herrin was one of the first female engineers with TVA when she was hired in 1978.

During her career, she was instrumental in modifying TVA's reservoir operations to improve water quality and meet the growing demand  for recreational use in the Tennessee Valley Region.

TVA officials say much of her work is still apparent in the way dams, hydroelectric plants and reservoirs are operated.

Herrin has served as CAO since 2010.

She plans to remain with TVA through October.
