The fire happened near 5 a.m. on Hillcrest Cove.

"As I went to call the fire department to get them over here, she was coming out the front door with her dog," said Adrian Collins, who lives one street over.

When firefighters arrived on the scene, the house was engulfed.

"She didn’t get out with anything. She didn’t even get her purse out of the house," added David Coltharp, who took the woman and her dog to his home. "All she had was the clothes on her back and shoes on her feet."

Deputy Fire Chief Mark Whiteside with New Albany Fire Department says the woman heard a noise and was able to escape.

Whiteside said the house also suffered severe damage to the carport and utility room areas. However, the house is considered a total loss.

The exact cause is being investigated, but it appears the fire was accidental.

Family members tell WTVA they believe the homeowner's dog Carter alerted her to the fire.
