UPDATE: Loaded gun found on THS campus, student arrested

TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) - A loaded gun was found on the campus of Tupelo High School Wednesday and a student was arrested.

The school district sent a message Wednesday morning saying the incident was handled swiftly and the campus is completely safe.

The matter has been referred to the Tupelo Police Department.

Later Wednesday, the district confirmed a student was arrested for the possession of a firearm on the campus. The student was taken into custody at approximately 11 a.m. and officers secured the firearm. Neither the district nor police have mentioned where the gun was found.

"Our district takes this situation very seriously and will adhere to the fullest extent of disciplinary action."

(Early Statement) - "Dear THS Staff, Parents, and Guardians:

We wanted you to know that at approximately 10:30am today, Tupelo High School administrators were notified that a loaded firearm was found on the campus. The incident was swiftly handled by administrators, school resource officers on the campus, and by the Tupelo Police Department. The campus has been deemed completely safe and the matter has been referred to the Tupelo Police Department.

THS administrators, faculty, security resource officers and security personnel swiftly handled the situation because of the training they have received. Keeping our campuses safe remains a very high priority to TPSD.

(Later Statement) - "Dear THS Staff, Parents, and Guardians:

We want to provide you with additional information regarding the weapon found at THS this morning. After speaking with Tupelo Police Department, Deputy Chief Alan Gilbert confirmed that a student was arrested for possession of a firearm on the THS campus.

The Tupelo Police Department took the student into custody at approximately 11:00 a.m. and secured the firearm. Our district takes this situation very seriously and will adhere to the fullest extent of disciplinary action.

TPSD’s highest priority is the safety of our students and staff.
