Alabama troopers investigated 23 deaths on state highways during the holiday period.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WTVA) – Alabama state troopers investigated 23 traffic deaths during a 17-day holiday travel period.

The period began on December 16 and ended at midnight on New Year’s Day.

The fatal crashes happened in the following counties: Autauga, Baldwin, Calhoun, Choctaw, Colbert, Coosa, Crenshaw, Cullman, Dallas, DeKalb, Escambia, Geneva, Limestone, Mobile, Russell, St. Clair, Shelby and Washington.

Troopers say those killed included 16 drivers, four passengers, two pedestrians and one bicyclist.

Of those who died in these crashes, troopers say 20 were traveling in vehicles equipped with seat belts, but 11 of them were not using them.

As for 2017, troopers investigated 598 traffic deaths, which were 73 fewer than 2016’s total.
