BOONEVILLE, Miss. (WTVA) - Fire officials are investigating a small church fire in Booneville.
Booneville Fire Chief Michael Rutherford says the fire was reported Wednesday morning at Tuscumbia Baptist Church on Jacinto Road.
He says the small fire started in the balcony area and left some soot damage in the sanctuary. He says the fire basically burned itself out.
Firefighters are investigating to see if the cause was electrical or possibly lightning related.
The church's pastor Ben Parman said he arrived at the churh, walked through the front doors and noticed a big cloud of smoke.
"Immediately, I said 'Lord, we got a problem,'" he said.
He says if he had not come in this morning, the church could have received more serious damage. However, he's blessed the flames didn't reach as far as did.
Parman says the church just finished rennovations. He says the church will resume Bible study on Wednesdays as planned and will have regular church service in the church's gym until rennovations are complete.
WTVA was shown surveillance video from the incident, which appears to show lightning coming through sometime near 7:13 a.m. Several minutes later, the video shows smoke, then flames appear.
However, the church agreed to not release the video until its insurance adjuster arrives.
