MYRTLE, Miss. (WTVA) - A man died in a house fire in Union County.

Union County Coroner Pam Bowman says firefighters received the emergency call around 12:30 a.m. Friday.

The fire burned through the home which sits on County Road 14.

It is a total loss.

Bowman has not officially identified the man.

A neighbor who is also the property owner says he tried to help the man get out of the home but the fire spread quickly.

“Flames came out of the windows and it was so intensely heated," Neighbor and Property Owner Michael Clark said.

Clark said his daughter woke him up after hearing popping noises just before midnight.

“The heat was just unbearable and there was nothing I could do to get him out," Clark said.

Myrtle residents describe the man as a sweet guy who stayed to himself.

They say he had several dogs, many of which died in the fire.

"I think he was trying to save his dogs," Clark said.

The mans body will be sent to Pearl this weekend for an autopsy.  The fire marshals are investigating to find out what caused the fire.

"It looks like it started from some sort of space heater," Union County Sheriff Jimmy Edwards said.

This is a developing story.
