John was born in Kansas City, Kansas just in time for the weather at 10:08 p.m.  He has been interested in weather since he was three years old.

When he was three, on a June afternoon, a weak tornado passed through his neighborhood.  From then on, he has been looking to the sky for the weather.  From the fifth grade through the eighth grade, he did science projects about the weather.  According to John, he is "basically weather crazy".

John spent time as a storm chaser while attending the University of Kansas.  Following graduation, he made his way to Tupelo and started work at WTVA with both the Mornin' and Noon shows in September of 1989.

When not monitoring the weather, John enjoys spending time with his two sons.  He is a self described "junk collector" and collects just about anything.  His other hobbies include playing video games, watching sports (especially the Kansas City Chiefs and the Royals), surfing the Internet, and talking about television and movie trivia.

When asked to name his favorite television shows and movies, some of his choices include the movies Once Upon A Time in the West and Cinema Paradiso, and television shows Gunsmoke and Quantum Leap.

John is also a ham radio operator, and speaks Croatian and Spanish.
