Dick Rice
Dick Rice
Chief Meteorologist Emeritus
drice@wtva.com
Born in western Massachusetts, Dick enlisted in the Navy after high school and spent his next twenty-one years on various ships, overseas stations, and a number of facilities in the United States. His primary responsibility as a meteorologist at this time was to provide flight forecasts to pilots, whether that be stateside, overseas, or in the South China Seas during the Vietnam era. One of his more interesting assignments was with the "Joint Typhoons Warning Center" on Guam where he had the opportunity to work with the "Typhoon Hunters," a unit which flew into the center of these storms in order to obtain meteorological data.
After two decades of naval service, Dick joined WTVA in 1979 when the station began looking to expand its staff of on-air meteorologists. Dick was hired to provide weather for the

and
Noon
shows. He comments, "The good ole days with Buddy and Kay and getting up at 4:30 a.m.—I'll never forget them."
In the years since, Dick has been around through massive advancements in weather graphic systems and Doppler radar, as well as the addition of two additional full-time meteorologists. But he says the primary objective remains the same—to provide the most accurate weather information possible, no matter what the circumstances may be.
Dick holds a B.S. Degree from Troy State University and did graduate work at Central Michigan University He is also a professional member of the American Meteorological Society.
On February 20, 2010, Dick was inducted into the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) Silver Circle, recognizing his contribution of over a quarter-century of dedication to the television industry. Less than two months later on April 10, 2010, he was inducted into the 2009 Mississippi Associated Press Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame in recognition of his distinguished broadcasting career, making him the first broadcaster from north Mississippi to receive this honor.
Apart from his weather expertise, Dick enjoys gardening and is rumored to grow a pretty good tomato. Although it's been a number of years since he has resided in the Northeast, he still follows New England professional teams closely, including the Red Sox. According to Dick, "I love the Patriots and still bleed Celtic green."
Dick became WTVA's Chief Meteorologist Emeritus on April 15, 2011 and stepped away from his day-to-day duties. Dick continues to be a part of the WTVA family, making school visits and taking part in community events. He also fills in for other members of The Weather Authority during vacations.
