CHICAGO (AP) _ The mythical detective Sherlock Holmes is the center of attention in a real-life copyright disagreement.

Copyright protections have expired on nearly all of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's tales and a federal judge in Chicago says writers are free to depict the character in new mysteries as long as they don't tread on 10 still-protected adventures.

Conan Doyle's estate begs to differ, saying the continued character development prevents other writers' takes on Holmes. An appeal is being considered.
